Abstract

The Norsemen, their past and mythology have been receiving constant attention in the contemporary mediatic environment. With such a revival, the image of the Viking warrior and his pantheon of gods started to manifest in our present imaginary once more, sometimes making justice to true historical characteristics, other times perpetuating stereotypes born mainly in the nineteenth century. The aim of the present paper is to analyze the powers, symbolisms and regencies of Marvel’s god Thor in his first movie, comparing the aspects of contemporary social imagery about the god perpetuated by this mediatic tool, with data available from old Norse vernacular mythology Þórr according to medieval sources. We are going to search for elements of Marvel’s god-hero which may have been derived from the Scandinavian deity and, simultaneously, for the aspect that may have been generated by the social imaginary surround the god.
