Abstract

Although not well known in Brazil, the life of African philosopher Anton Wilhelm Amo, born in the Gold Coast (present-day Ghana) around the beginning of the 18th century, became an important milestone in the debate on African and Afrodiasporic philosophy. This paper investigates and discusses his childhood in Africa, the least known period of his life. Based on contemporary research and documents from Amo’s period, it present and discuss what is known about his birth, his family, and the condition under which he was taken to Europe in 1707.
