THE POST-MODERN CONDITION BY JEAN-FRANÇOIS LYOTARD AND ITS EPISTEMOLOGICAL CONSEQUENCES

Abstract

The 1960s underwent a profound political, economic and social transformations that, dialectically and consequently, reverberated in the discussions about the status of knowledge since then. In this context, the book The Postmodern Condition by Jean-François was the first to discuss the position of knowledge in the most developed societies and the condition of culture after the transformations in science, art and literature that guided the production, distribution and legitimation of knowledge in western societies. The purpose of this work, in this sense, is to debate a critical re-reading and a detailed investigation of this work. However, an investigation like this, couldn’t be limited to reviewing works in a fragmented way, for that reason I add other works of the same author, as well as related ones, to extend the discussion. My goal, therefore, is to draw an interpretive line from the beginning of postmodern criticism on the status of knowledge in the West, and then show the problems and limits of this criticism.
