Mcbain's Procedural Fissure, Kurosawa's Modern Tragedy, and Spike Lee's Immunization

Abstract

In this article, we trace the critical genealogy of the ‘mistaken kidnapping’ narrative, from its origin in Ed McBain's novel King’s Ransom (1959) through its transcultural adaptations in Akira Kurosawa's High and Low [Tengoku to jigoku] (1963), culminating in our analysis of Spike Lee's Highest 2 Lowest (2025). Drawing on adaptation theory as palimpsest and reception studies, we argue that the vitality of this premise lies in its plasticity for re-signification, functioning as a seismograph of each era's contradictions. Although the narrative's trajectory undergoes a crucial metamorphosis, it never fully abandons its procedural origins, being continuously re-signified by each author. It begins with McBain’s procedural fissure, is elevated to a modern tragedy by Kurosawa, and culminates in Spike Lee’s strategy of insurgent immunization. In this final stage, the film does not aim for revolution but operates as a hammer that strikes from within at the racial and class fissures of late neoliberalism, through an affective economy of saturation and spectacle. The analysis demonstrates how this strategy, by converting critique into a spectacular commodity, generates receptive ambivalence – from celebration to frustration – that symptomizes the very paradox of cultural criticism in the age of late capitalism, where formal efficacy coexists with the potential depoliticization of class-based political horizons.
