Abstract

The work of Frida Kahlo is completely interpenetrated with opposing principles that are responsible for the creation of tension fields that attract and intrigue its observer. Life-and-death is the main pair of complementary concepts determinating the issue and structure of her work. Although applying this structure of thoughts to the social and political realities will probably lead to simple and superficial results, it has to be considered that its application within abstract and universal concepts enabled on the other hand the creation of Kahlos most remarkable paintings. Even her self-portraits reflect the painters conviction, that bipolar principles rule the logic of human existence. To understand the importance of dichotomy for the structure of Kahlos art can help us to explore deeper her iconography and contributes to offer an alternative hermeneutic to the exclusively psycho-biographic analysis of her work.
