Abstract

According to Regiments and Portuguese Ordinances of the sixteenth century, the christian marriage follows the logic of God's covenant with humanity and is based on the incarnation of Christ in human history, whence all conjugal morality emerges. The first reason of this "sacrament," of this social inviolability, derives from the commandment contained in the Gospel: " What therefore God has joined together, let no man put asunder." We discuss here about the marriage contracted according to the canonical norms, "by this word”, which means the wedding that the faithful celebrate in the church before a priest. Breaking the Christian marriage means breaking the covenant between God and his people; therefore, this involves a desecration, a sin, a crime, an inversion of the divine order conceived by the Church. Those who had contracted marriage in the Catholic Church and perhaps get married a second time, were harshly punished.
