UM ARTISTA ROMÂNTICO NO INTERIOR DE UMA EXPEDIÇÃO CIENTÍFICA

Aimé-Adrien Taunay was engaged as a draftsman at the Russian expedition in Brazil, realized between 1825 and 1828 under G.H. Langsdorff’s command. During this time, he executed his work with sensitive intuition, and, together with Rugenda’s and Ender’s legacy, we can include it among the best oeuvres done by traveler-artists in this country. However, Aimé-Adrien’s participation at this enterprise stood under the pressure of bitter conflicts with his chief. As a delicate person, he could neither adapt himself to the strong rules imposed by Langsdorff, nor to the exhausting daily life of an expedition of this kind. The documents reveal some features concerning the behavior and the personal relations the members of the expedition established among each other during such a long time living together. Based on it, here Taunay will be observed as an illustrator of a scientific expedition, discussing his work as a part of the artistic production of travelers done during the first half of the 19th Century, and considering the conflicts lived by the artist as part of such an enterprise.
