Abstract

In his Scenes of Brazilian life (1930-1954), set formed of ten great panels and one hundred lithographies, João Câmara represents important episodes of Brazil’s recent history, related to the political career of Getúlio Vargas, starting with the murder of João Pessoa, in 1930, in Recife, and finishing with the suicide of the President, in 1954. Far from trying to compose an official chronicle, the artist takes great freedom with the facts, associating, in an imaginary space, real and fictitious personages to uncommon objects, creating weird paintings that makes the spectator unease. This article will deal with Câmara’s reading of historical painting, analyzing some of the panels of the Vargas’ saga.
