The article treats with one of the Augustan Principate’s rising ideology, that is, the virtues of the prince, as exemplified on the so-called shield of virtue, which the emperor himself cited in Res Gestae 34.2, taking into account the interconnection between these virtues with republican tradition, as well as the meaning of those in the context immediately afterwards the Battle of Actium.
