Abstract

In this article we point out some of the many similarities and few differences in the slaveholding structures in São Paulo and Minas Gerais in the nineteenth century. Those two Brazilian capitanias experienced distinct economic moments at that time. While Minas Gerais was undergoing a decline in its gold and diamond mining economy, São Paulo showed a dynamic growth in its agriculture. Despite those differences, the data analyzed in our study reveal a substantial similarity between the slaveholding structures of both capitanias. Moreover, the characteristics of those structures differed dramatically from what is described in the traditional Brazilian historiography.
