Abstract

This paper analyzes a 2008 Indian film about the XVI century Mughal emperor Akbar. Although Akbar was a notable emperor in many ways, the movie Jodhaa Akbar focuses on his relationship with a Rajput princess. The work aims at showing that to portray the romantic involvement of the Muslim emperor with his Hindu queen is a choice with political overtones. In our analysis, we present three other biographies of the emperor, two of the sixteenth century and one written in 1917, seeking similarities and differences in the representation of the marriage and the princess.
