TEMÍSTIO DE BIZÂNCIO E A DEFESA DA AÇÃO PÚBLICA DOS FILÓSOFOS NA ORATIO XXVI

In this article we aim at discussing Themistius’ conceptions on the political action of philosophers and rethors in the IV Century A.D. through the ideas that the Oratio XXVI, entitled “The right of the philosophers speak up publicly”, conveys. According to the Neo-Platonist school, the main Pagan intellectual stream in the end of the Ancient World, the philosophers should avoid contributing to the political life of their local communities, refusing any public charge. Otherwise, Themistius refutes this kind of political conception and defends the philosophical contribution to the construction of a public space in the polis based on Greek intellectual principles settled by ancient philosophers such as Socrates, Plato and Aristotle.
