Abstract

This article analyzes Hipolito José da Costa Pereira’s – naturalist and traveler- perception of nature using two documents written after his journey to the Unites States: United States Journey Memory, published in Brazilian Historic and Geographic Institute’s Magazine, in 1858, and My Philadelphia’s Journey Diary (1798 - 1799), published in 1955. Based on this two documents, we wish to understand the inequalities and the permanencies in the themes and broaching that Hipolito makes about nature’s elements, in his ideas production and, at the same time, in his seek for the academic parameters of his time. This way we’ll follow the traveler’s temporality, at first with Hipolito’s Diary and than with his Memory. So through his descriptions we’ll disclose the feelings and thoughts of a man and his observations, retaking a “Setecentista” Journey experience.
