Abstract

This article intends to critically revalue, after fifty years of his opening, the play A moratória, by Jorge Andrade. Firstly, we will try to recover the criticisms of Décio de Almeida Prado and Sábato Magaldi, by the time of the first staging of A moratória, on the Theatre Maria Della Costa, in São Paulo. With these criticisms we will articulate a reflection about the modern drama and its development in Brazil. After that, we will discuss the concept of cycle, which permeate all the work of Jorge Andrade, starting from the perspective of Anatol Rosenfeld and, principally, from the criterions developed by Catarina Sant’Anna. Finally, we will seek to analyze the dramatic text by a dialectical analysis attempt, as developed by Antonio Candido, trying to understand how the dialectic between past and present operates as a generalization principle, which formalizes the historical reality in the structure of the text.
