Abstract

The political crisis involving the brazilian Labour Party (PT), whose rise to power in 2002 was taken as a hope by many of its old-school members, shattered down their belief in an effective political action that could change the old social inequalities in Brazil. Machado de Assis’ work, which is wrongly labeled as conservative, might show a path toward the overcoming of the present melancholy that threatens the brazilian left-wing. Through an analysis of Machado’s classic novel Confessions of a small time winner, this paper aims to discuss the possible origins and consequences of the brazilian political melancholy.
