Abstract

This article discusses the presence, in the comic book Camelot 3000 (1983-85), of themes from medieval literature, particularly from Thomas Malory’s chivalric romance Le Morte d’Arthur, which Camelot 3000 partly continues and partly adapts. The article argues that the choices involved in this adaptation serve a discourse which is doubly sustained: at one hand, diabolical forces from the Middle Ages amalgamate themselves with the problems of an apocalyptic year 3000, such as concentration camps and science abuse, constituting thereby a single and clearly discernible evil side; this is opposed, on another hand, by miraculous and heroic aspects from the Middle Ages. It is discussed, then, how the discourse thereby produced presents, nostalgically, the return to the Middle Ages as a solution for the evils of the present, of which Camelot 3000’s far future is no more than a mirror.
