Abstract

This work aims to bring back the historicity from the play Calabar – The praise of betrayal (1973) written by Chico Buarque and Ruy Guerra. Made under the Military Dictatorship, which provided some obstacles to the play montage, is a historical allegory lived int the Dutch Invasions time, in Brazil, of the seventh century. The issue about loyalty and betrayal is approached, in a clear allusion to the political conjuncture of the period in which it was written. From the understading of History through Theatre, we will search to analyse political resistance and power relations from the past/present relation, besides the use of the historical allegory as artistic stratagem to report social troubles.
