Abstract

This article intends to demonstrate the principles that conduct Lanzmann’s cinematographic work: Shoah. Our focus of analysis will be on the challenge of representing a historical past: how to get close to it without diminishing or falsifying its contents and, yet, maintaining the perception and awareness that any picture of the past will always be necessarily different from the past itself. Lanzmann tries to solve this difficult question, and builds his film upon the testimony - the word that can reinvent itself e reconstruct the past (and that is necessary, for the past can’t be lost) - and the filming of the places where once the catastrophe has occurred, the “non-places of the memory”, blanks that can be fulfilled with the gaps of discourse.
