Abstract

Analyzing the short-story “A fuga”, by Clarice Lispector, written in 1940, we discuss the literary representation this author does about the role housewives used to perform in the Brazilian society of the first have of last century. Approaching the text from a feminist perspective, we observe that social issues developed by Lispector in this short-story indicate fertile possibilities to discuss the impasses women were facing when trying to question patriarchal culture at that time. The present analysis is based on gender studies, mainly to those related to conflicts between domestic and public spheres. In order to understand the inaction of the female character, studies of Theodor Adorno, about the negative epopee, and the concept of the problematic hero, by Georg Lukács, have been very helpful.
